Causes of Back Injuries
Back pain can result from a variety of reasons. Trauma to the bone or muscle tissue, normal wear and tear, or whiplash are a few more common reasons for inflammation and pain. The most common type of back injury is a sprain or strain. The lower back is most regularly the site of discomfort, although many injuries affect the middle and upper back as well. It is estimated that up to as many as 50 to 75 percent of Americans suffer from back pain.
Back injuries can affect every aspect of life. Injuries to the back generally affect the spinal column, the spinal cord, or both. The spinal column is made up of bones called vertebra. In between these vertebra are intervertebral discs that keep the bones separate. A bulge or herniation to one of these discs can put pressure on a nerve root, which can be incredibly painful and even require surgical intervention. In the event a nerve root is touched or pinched, many of our clients will report feeling numbness or tingling at the site of the pinch and into their extremities.
Running through the center of the spinal column is the spinal cord. The spinal cord is a collection of nerves that carry messages from the brain to the rest of the body. Injuries to the spinal cord can affect the proper functioning of arms, legs, fingers, toes, and torso. Severe damage to the spinal cord can result in irreversible paraplegia (no working use of legs) or quadriplegia (no working use of arms and legs).
Muscular strains or damage to the muscles surrounding the spine are observed in most accidents. Small tears to the muscle tissue in this area can lead to the formation of scar tissue, which can cause long-term or permanent pain. With proper treatment and medical intervention, a chiropractor or physical therapist may be able to successfully break down the scar tissue and avoid a permanent problem. Our legal team has an extensive database of treatment providers and can put you in touch with a competent physician in your area that can help eradicate your pain and set you on the path to recovery.
